How should you prepare facility entrances before winter?

Walk the routes people use to enter the property. Record uneven surfaces, drainage problems, lighting concerns, and the arrangements for seasonal maintenance.
1. Trace the real journey
Review the route from parking and drop-off areas to each regularly used entrance, including accessible routes.
2. Document conditions
Record loose railings, damaged steps, uneven paving, and places where water collects. Keep observations specific and location-based.
3. Plan service coverage
Confirm who monitors weather, contacts the maintenance provider, and communicates changes to building users. Include weekends and special events.
4. Close the loop
Assign the repair decisions and seasonal service arrangements to named people. Keep contact details available to the opening team.
Bring this to your next facility meeting
Route; surface concern; drainage location; lighting issue; maintenance contact; weekend coverage.
For each open item, record the person responsible, the next action, and the date for review.
These field notes support facility planning. Equipment servicing, diagnosis, and repairs should be handled by appropriately qualified providers.
