What should a facility power outage plan include?

GFI lighting and power graphic: When the lights go out, what happens next?

Review the building’s outage procedures, responsible contacts, and maintenance records for emergency systems. Arrange testing and repairs through qualified providers.

1. Review the written plan

Identify who makes decisions during an interruption and how staff, visitors, and event leaders receive instructions.

2. Collect system records

Gather inspection and service records for emergency lighting, exit signs, and any backup equipment. Note unresolved findings.

3. Record visible concerns

Report failed lights, damaged fittings, and areas that are difficult to navigate. Do not open electrical panels or attempt electrical repairs.

4. Confirm follow-through

Have the responsible provider document testing and corrective work. Update staff instructions when equipment or procedures change.

Bring this to your next facility meeting

Responsible contact; service records; failed lights; backup equipment; open findings; communication procedure.

For each open item, record the person responsible, the next action, and the date for review.

These field notes support facility planning. Equipment servicing, diagnosis, and repairs should be handled by appropriately qualified providers.
