How should facility leaders address drafty doors and windows?

Start with a room-by-room record of drafts, damaged seals, and doors that do not close properly. The goal is a clear repair list that also preserves safe access and exit.
1. Listen to the people using the space
Ask staff which entrances and rooms feel uncomfortable. Record when the concern occurs and how frequently the space is occupied.
2. Observe normal operation
Note sticking doors, visible gaps, loose hardware, and damaged weather seals. Do not alter fire doors, exit hardware, or required ventilation.
3. Group the work
Separate routine adjustments from damaged assemblies and recurring moisture concerns. Request a qualified assessment where the cause is unclear.
4. Check the result
After agreed repairs, confirm normal door operation and ask users whether the original concern remains. Record any follow-up needed.
Bring this to your next facility meeting
Door or window location; observed gap or damage; closing problem; room use; photos; repair owner.
For each open item, record the person responsible, the next action, and the date for review.
These field notes support facility planning. Equipment servicing, diagnosis, and repairs should be handled by appropriately qualified providers.
